Five Days In Pittsburgh: NextGen Conference & Shenanigans

This was NOT on my list of trips for 2019.

I thought I would come back from New York and have a whole lotta NOTHINGNESS and savings until I head to Trinidad Carnival in February 2020. I was wrong. (I’m not upset about it though)

Life is funny like that, sometimes you end up on trips to places you didn’t ever really plan on going to and end up having an awesome time. That’s my trip to Pittsburgh. I had an AWESOME time. I’m not sure if it was because of the two incredible coworkers I had with me (shout out to Elysha and Adrienne) or because of the other people I was lucky to meet at the conference (shout out to Ryin, Zack and Ian, and everyone else whose name I can’t remember right now) or food? Sports maybe? I liked it all. I had a fun time attending my first work conference and took advantage of everything Pittsburgh had to offer.

Usually I would divide my recaps into days but this one isn’t so straightforward because I was all over the place. Kind of split it up into categories so the conference itself would have it’s own section along with food and sports.

The NextGen Conference

Getting there

I had written a post about the whole process of getting from Detroit to Pittsburgh, and that can be found here.

The awesome thing about where the central bus station for Pittsburgh is located was that it was about a three minute walk from the location of my hotel for the week! Super accessible and no need for Google Maps this time.

The Hotel

The place I would be resting my head all week was the Westin Pittsburgh. Super fancy pants right? Awesome.

It has this beautiful green entrance, incredibly courteous staff and listen, the bed in my room? Oh lord. I had one of the king rooms for the duration of my stay and it was the best bed I have ever slept in. Prior to this the #1 bed was The Royal York, here in Toronto. It beat that. So cozy and huge.

In the lobby of the hotel there was a bar, an Edible Arrangements, a miniature Chic-Fil-A (but don’t get excited, it literally only has the sandwiches), a Starbucks and a big candy store. The second floor of the hotel also had a big breakfast restaurant open from 6am-11am.

Along with it being a really nice hotel the best two parts about it were: 1) the conference was taking place inside the hotel and 2) super central location. Random, there was also a massive sinkhole across from the hotel and I had never seen one of those before. I’m talking about like apparently a WHOLE BUS had gone into the sinkhole couple weeks before we arrived.

The Workshops

Now let’s talk about the actual conference.

A couple of us were super lucky to be chosen to attend the United Steelworkers 2019 NextGen Conference. This was for all USW members across the USA and Canada that were under 35. The next generation of union members basically. It was a week to learn about the union, meet other delegates and be educated on various issues within each others workplaces etc.

My favourite workshops were:

  1. Race and the Economy
  2. Language in the Workplace
  3. Workplace Grievances
  4. The Bystander Effect: Break the Silence on Gender-Based Violence

The language workshop was especially heated because we learned quickly that what we think is inappropriate to say in the workplace (or ever) others think is totally fine. It was a spirited debate and although an uncomfortable conversation in some ways, I see why it has to be had.

Tuesday and Wednesday were solely for attending these workshops and I’m happy I chose the ones I did. I learned a lot about the union and also about American issues in the workplace.

The Day of Community Service

We were all really looking forward to this day!

All 900 of the attendees would be dispatched to different organizations around Pittsburgh to do a day of community service.

I ended up at the Boys & Girls Club of America.

Four of us would be tasked with removing ALL the contents out of one office, paint the walls and a cupboard and then put all the contents back in when it’s done drying. Listen, I haven’t had to bend and crouch like that for a long time. My body was doneeeee. I did the cupboard all by myself though, you can see my artwork below. Very proud.

After the day of service we all returned back to the hotel and got to enjoy a wonderful closing gala that night. This included music, food and alcohol. It was a great way to close off a really fun conference.

Food Choices

Leon’s Caribbean Food

I had been scheming on this place from before even arriving in Pittsburgh. Leon’s Caribbean Food had something on the menu that had my eye and I wanted to make time to go to the restaurant and try it. Unfortunately, between the conference and the sporting events I didn’t have the opportunity to go to the actual restaurant. However, there is always a million food delivery choices so I opted for that.

The curry lobster with rice and a side of plantain. That is what my heart desired. During one of the conference lunch breaks I ordered via Uber Eats some Leon’s to my hotel room. It was DELICIOUS. I will say the curry was thicker and more on the Thai-curry side than the West Indian curry, but still, amazing. If you go to Pittsburgh, make sure you try this dish!

Leons Caribbean Food Pittsburgh

Bakersfield

One of the conference attendees who was actually from Pittsburgh recommended we try Bakersfield. He said the queso alone was worth the visit, and I sure love me some queso.

My coworkers and I wandered over during one of the lunch breaks to try out their queso and tacos. Let me say, yes, the queso was very good. Nice and thick with a lot of chips on the side for dipping. Now, the tacos? Eh. I’ve had way better tacos and these were also so tiny so I needed them to really pack a flavorful punch but they didn’t. Also, my one coworker who is allergic to avocado specifically said no guac on her tacos and they brought it on both anyways. Not a fan of that either.

Just go for the queso and tequila.

Seven

This place isn’t a food place, but I can assure you they have liquor. That’s a food group right? Great.

Seven Nightclub was where all the conference attendees ended their week. I was unaware that many had actually been going all week to party here, apparently we were late. We just went on the final night.

It was kind of funny that Thursday night was karaoke night, so until midnight we were listening to peoples renditions of Eminem and Lauryn Hill. My poor ears.

After that we got to dancing and the DJ was pretty decent. I think we all head home at about 2:30am. Good times.

Seven Signs Pittsburgh

Sports, Sports, Sports

University of Pittsburgh

This was going to be a first for me!

I have never attended an NCAA basketball game and my one opportunity to do so would come in Pittsburgh. My coworker Adrienne and I got tickets to Pittsburgh vs Monmouth. As a Duke fan, I didn’t know anything about either of these two teams but it was OK because I got to watch basketball and that’s a win either way.

Can’t say the game was particularly exciting, the scoring was slow and there was just bad shooting overall from both sides. We had really good seats and watching the Pittsburgh band was the best part of the experience. They sure get into the festivities.

The $30 price tag for two tickets was a STEAL. I have to add that. The facilities at the University of Pittsburgh are beautiful and watching an NCAA game in some nice seats at $15/per person couldn’t be any better.

Pittsburgh Penguins

The house of Sidney Crosby.

Shit. Nevermind, Crosby is injured.

Still had an awesome time. My coworker Elysha and I got tickets to Pittsburgh Penguins vs New York Islanders. Again, for a fucking steaaaal of a price. I think combined we paid $90.

Do you know what kind of seat I can get for $45/per person for the Maple Leafs? I can’t. Maybe I could sit outside of the arena and eat a hot dog for that price, I can’t even enter the building for $45. Meanwhile, at PPG we had nice seats and you know, a team that has won in the past 50 years to watch. (sorry, makes me sad having to throw shade at a Toronto team, but our prices are shit!)

Did I mention there was $10 bottomless popcorn? We literally entered some magical NHL land.

The game ended up being really good, even without Crosby. They went into overtime and sadly ended up losing to the Islanders. But I’m not going to complain about extra free hockey watching.

We had a great time and I can see why Torontonians venture to Pittsburgh and just get a hotel + tickets to a Penguins game instead of forking out the huge bucks for a Leafs game.

Definitely suggest for all of you to visit Pittsburgh at some point. This city is super fun, especially if you’re into sports. The downtown area being so walkable makes everything really simple and straightforward to get to.

I hope I get to return to Pittsburgh again one day, heck, even if it’s for another conference, I’M IN!

Taking a Bus from Detroit to Pittsburgh

I would like all of you to know – Ohio is huge.

Best way to begin this blog post is to notify you of this fact. I swear the bus left Michigan and 10 seconds later I was in Ohio and then spent seven out of the next eight hours just driving through the state of Ohio. Massive.

Last week I was visiting my family in Detroit for the weekend and then had a conference to attend in Pittsburgh. I figured there was no point in driving back four hours to re-enter Canada only to have to exit Canada all over again, so bus it was!

Bus from Detroit to Pittsburgh Time and Station Info

Above is the transit information for the Greyhound bus booking I made. It would take just under eight hours to get from Detroit to Pittsburgh. That’s fine by me, I knew the bus would have Wi-Fi, a bathroom and at least no border crossings would be involved.

The cost? $33.99 USD = $45.20 CAD

For an almost eight hour bus ride I thought this was a great price!

I arrived at the bus station at 6:40am to drop off my big bag and to make sure I got a decent window-seat. I really didn’t know how packed this route would be so I wanted to be on the safe side.

The drop off for luggage was very simple, the location of the Greyhound station in Detroit is super accessible and I should mention it has a BUNCH of vending machines if you want snacks. We boarded on time, the bus was pretty empty and we also left on time at 7:00am heading towards the first stop – Toledo.

I was lucky enough that my aunt had packed me a bunch of corn muffins for the road, and I grabbed two water bottles for it as well. There are plugs on the bus, but make sure to choose wisely as not all of them worked. I switched between three seats before I found functioning plugs. The Wi-Fi was OK if you have to check mail or maybe use your WhatsApp. I wouldn’t suggest streaming anything on it, I chose to pre-download all the movies for the road.

The stop for Toledo ended up being about 25 minutes instead of 10 minutes because we were ahead of schedule. This was a good time to get a breakfast sandwich at the Subway inside the station if you’re extra hungry.

We departed at 8:30am from Toledo and headed for Cleveland. Until the Cleveland stop, the bus continued to be really empty. Everyone had almost a whole row to themselves.

Then we got to Cleveland. This stop was one hour long and it was kind of nice to be able to get up and stretch your legs for an extended period of time. I personally think the one hour layover is a bit long for someone trying to go all the way to Washington (that’s where the bus I was on was going to, Pittsburgh was just another stop along the way).

Leaving Cleveland the bus got full to capacity. Every seat had a body in it and I unfortunately ended up next to a dude who kept falling asleep on me. Luckily, I have very strong elbows and made sure that every time his head fell – he was going to need a helmet next time he did that.

There were two more stops, one in Akron and one in Youngstown, prior to arriving in Pittsburgh.

The entire ride literally felt like an Ohio-sightseeing tour. It was like ‘okay here’s 5 minutes in Michigan, 7 and a half hours of Ohio and another 5 minutes of Pennsylvania‘.

I arrived in Pittsburgh on time and the entrance was pretty awesome. You suddenly see a bunch of bridges and then Heinz field. So cool.

That is my recap of what taking the bus from Detroit to Pittsburgh is like. I would definitely do it again, I wasn’t too phased by it and I was comfortable enough for $45.00.

New York Girls Trip Recap: But Did You Die?

Bet you’re wondering what the hell I was thinking with the title of this blog post. If you understood the kind of weekend I just went through, you’d know that feeling like death at the end of it was a very normal feeling. Almost expected? I’m 32 years old and I legitimately had no business getting on the way I did this past long weekend.

Do I regret anything? HELL NO.

Well, sorry, I regret booking my flight with WestJet – but we will get to that.

The way this trip came to be was that I knew I’d be broke as hell with my trip to Europe during summer 2019. I’m one of those people who likes to go all out for my friends birthdays so I had to think of some way to do/plan way ahead for the year.

My friend Sherry‘s birthday is in July. Jummy‘s birthday is in August. Lorren‘s birthday is in October. This time of year would truly be my BROKEST because I was in Europe from August 9th – September 2nd. What could I do that would work for all three, BUT, do it earlier in the year while I have money?

Ahhh, let me book a trip for all four of us. So in January, I asked all of them if they had plans for (Canada’s) Thanksgiving Weekend and they said no. Boom. Sent them e-mail confirmations about flights to New York for October 11th – October 14th. Girls Trip to New York as a birthday gift to all three. Mission accomplished.

Friday Flight Issues

Unfortunately, once the trip finally came it started out rough.

Our flight was supposed to leave Toronto at 7:30pm on Friday, October 11th and arrive at LaGuardia for 9pm. This would have given us plenty time to take an Uber from the airport to our hotel, drop our things, and Uber it to our 11pm reservation at The Sugar Factory in the Meatpacking District.

None of that shit happened though.

We planned on getting to Pearson Airport at about 5:30pm to begin the check in process BUT at 3:30pm we all received an e-mail from WestJet that our flight was 45 minutes delayed. Okay, not the WORST delay ever but we would need to alter a plans a little. Sherry changed our reservation to 11:30pm instead and we still had some hope. Cool.

We were supposed to take off at 7:30pm and now it was 8:15pm. By the time we got to Pearson Airport, that time turned to 8:24pm. Again, not too crazy.

After crossing through that insane line/process to be OK’d by U.S. Customs Agents, we made it to our gate around 6:30ish. We sat down and then the flight attendant for WestJet made the announcement that our flight had been delayed, again. We went from arriving at 9pm in LaGuardia to now we wouldn’t even be leaving Pearson until 9pm. Furthermore, we actually didn’t leave at 9pm. By the time the plane FROM LaGuardia got to Pearson, people disembarked, they cleaned, removed luggage + put our luggage and we sat on the plane – it was about 9:45pm. We were leaving Toronto 2 hours and fifteen minutes later than we were supposed to.

WestJet Delayed
My phone notifying me of how the departure time keeps getting later and later.

Absolutely fucking livid. The explanation we received from WestJet was that LaGuardia is having a lot of construction work done so many flights were not leaving on time bla bla bla. There goes our whole Friday night plans. By the time we landed in LaGuardia we had to cancel our reservation and the only option left was to take the Uber to hotel and sleep.

Uber, Lyft, Juno

I believe once we finally exited the airport and made it over to the ‘rideshare pick up‘ area it was about 11:30pm. We tried to see how much an Uber from the airport to our hotel would be.

$118.00 USD

ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHTEEN AMERICAN DOLLARS!!!

It’s not new to me that rides from airports everywhere in the world tend to be a bit pricier, but $118? Get that the hell out of here. We realized at that moment that probably the rest of the Canadians that had gotten off our airplane were requesting Uber as well. There were signs for Lyft and Juno around the area as well. So we tried Lyft because we had never heard of Juno.

$50.88 USD

It was $67.12 USD cheaper to take a Lyft than it was an Uber from LaGuardia to our hotel. We obviously took that option and made the excruciatingly long trek from LaGuardia over to the Prospect Park area.

Friday Night, Finally

After a long commute due to the construction at LaGuardia and for some reason there being traffic at 11:30pm on the roads – we made it to our hotel. I had booked us at the Comfort Inn, Prospect Park in Brooklyn.

If I may add at this point, thank goodness I booked the flights and hotel as early as I did. The week we were going to fly to New York our exact flight was $983.00 roundtrip per person (I paid less than that for all four of us in January) and our hotel for three nights was $1300.00 (hellll no). People may sometimes pick on me for doing things really early but this is one of those times I was very happy I did.

There are no pictures of our room in the hotel because we literally got there and were so starving that it was all we could focus on. We showered and ordered pizza to settle our stomachs as quickly as we could. Then we went to sleep. There go all those awesome Friday night plans. At 1am after all the BS we had been through getting to New York, we were going to sleep.

Brunch and Coney Island

Sherry had found this brunch place online and made a reservation a while ago. The place was called 230 Fifth Rooftop and it was located in Manhattan.

We got our cute clothes on and headed for the subway to go into the city. It didn’t end up being too bad, I think it only took 32 minutes or so to get to the location from our hotel. We didn’t even see any weird shit on transit, have to admit that was a let down. I have historically seen some very wild stuff on the trains in New York but we were not that lucky this time.

Our reservation was for 1pm and we were let into our seats right away. The view from that rooftop is really amazing and it wasn’t super busy at the time. We opted for the $29.00 all you can eat brunch.

Because I am lazy, I will say here I hate situations where I have to stand up while eating. I like to enjoy as much food as possible and enjoy doing nothing. With the brunch, you had to go down a flight of stairs to go get your food and then come back up to your table to eat it. Repeat. Repeat.

Thank goodness the food was very good or that would have annoyed me much more. If I may suggest that you must try the chicken and waffles because the chicken was fried PERFECTLY. Also, I chose to drizzle some Nutella on my waffles because I can’t live without Nutella.

After we finished our food the four of us also took some time to take cute pictures and videos in front of their ‘Kiss Me Here’ sign and the indoor ‘Wish You Were Here’ sign. Aw.

Because Lorren is a hippie, we walked over to some stone store after brunch. All those amethysts and whatnots, you know those ones? Yeah. She purchased some more for her collection and now she is Thanos so watch out if the world starts going to hell. Lorren got all her Infinity Stones and is wreaking havoc with them obviously.

We also went into this little store where they sell super cheap jewelry but you have to spend at least $24.00 to shop there. We managed to surpass that minimum EASILY. I love hoop earrings and big gaudy earrings as well, lots to choose from.

It was now time to head over to Coney Island. I hadn’t been there since I was 17 years old and I think the other three girls had never been there. Seemed like a cute place to go visit during our afternoon, plus we had dinner reservations for 6pm at Footprints Cafe there.

The train from our location in Manhattan to Coney Island took about 45 minutes and again, we saw no wild shit on the train. We wandered around the rides and the beach area until it was dinner time. I was a little shocked that on a day where it was only 18 degrees (Celsius) outside people were still entering the water. It was really busy around nonetheless, there was a nice man cutting mangoes right next to us into flower shapes and hoards of families wandering as well.

At this point we walked over to Footprints. Now let me tell you about Footprints OK? Every damn time one of my friends goes to New York, they always post pictures of the food at this place. I had to try it! We had to try it!

Imagine Jamaican food with a bunch of pasta thrown in, playfully referred to as ‘rasta pasta‘ in this situation. It was amazing. I live my life trying to devour as much carbs as I can as an Eastern European, so this place was REALLY made for me.

Sherry and Lorren got plantain with a shrimp pasta. Jummy got the most amazing pasta with oxtail. I chose to go for roti skin, mac & cheese, fried breadfruit and some jerk shrimp. A little bit of everything. I did regret just not getting the damn oxtail though, that really looked like it would change my life for the better.

I would like all of you to know, this was the moment where my life went to shit. Well, not my life, but my decisions for my body.

Jummy’s wonderful cousin Deji (a new Yorker) decided to grace us with his presence at Footprints. Because two days prior to us coming to New York it was Lorren’s birthday he wanted to treat us to some alcohol in celebration.

This was a bad idea.

We had already been drinking some of their WILDLY named cocktails at Footprints but he wanted shots. We all did shots of tequila, cool, went down nicely. But it wasn’t enough. He decided to tell the bartender it was Lorren’s birthday and the bartender did NOT pour out shot glasses for our second round. Oh no, that was poured INTO AN ACTUAL GLASS. I remember going to drink it and thinking to myself, ‘the drink was supposed to end one ounce ago.’ This is how I knew, I may die this evening.

Saturday Night

Deji drove us home and we began to get ready to go do some clubbing in Manhattan. One of my Instagram followers had mentioned that there was going to be a good party at SOBS in Manhattan. I was especially excited because one of the DJ’s on the flyer was Bobby Konders and I used to listen to the Massive B mixtapes when I was younger. This guy is a great DJ.

It was ladies free before midnight with free Jack Danie’s and/or tequila with the entrance. They let the entire line of women in at the same time and the guys stood outside and waited. I loved this policy!

Once we got in we kept drinking. And drinking. And dancing. All I can tell you is that the music was great and that we made it home safely at about 5am. The end.

Sunday Funday

Well, I woke up at 1pm – I think. My whole body hurt and the remnants of the drinking the night before were very clear in the pain I felt in my head as well.

The other three girls were also in and out of sleep and we were clearly way too late for the breakfast that was included in our hotel stay. We lingered and lingered until I eventually ordered us some breakfast on Uber Eats.

We ate HEARTILY and fell right back asleep. That is how we literally spent our Sunday. In and out of sleep. I wish I had actually stayed sleeping the whole time but instead I woke up at some moments to watch my Dallas Cowboys lose to the 0-4 New York Jets. Disgusting.

The only thing worse than a hangover is watching your team lose to a shittier team.

I’d say at about 8pm we finally began to stand up and start getting for another night of partying. We had RSVP’d to an event called ‘Afrobeats & Brunch‘ at Le Souk. No cover, big win. Also, yes I understand we went to a party at 10pm that mentions brunch but I’m not really into asking too many questions you know? We just wanted to party some more.

Once we arrived at the club at about 10:30pm we were quickly let in and went up two flights of stairs to the party area. It was nice, I just don’t like narrow nightclubs. I prefer to have a lot of space to dance and this party was very popular and it looked like that wouldn’t be an option. Lorren had purchased four drinks and that shit came to $60. SIXTY USD. Nope. We did the math and obviously the best idea was for us to just pay for a damn booth.

We went with a bottle of tequila and with tax/gratuity it came to $386.00 USD. Please don’t do the currency conversion for that into Canadian, it will make you upset.

I regret none of this decision-making because now we would have our own area to sit/dance/stand and a bottle with all the trimmings to ourselves as well. The bottle service lady was awesome because she even brought the bottle to our table with a ‘happy birthday Lorren‘ sign and sparklers. I thought it was really cute.

Afrobeats and Brunch

Just like the night before, this night included a lot of alcohol consumption. The only difference was that this evening we couldn’t stay until 4am. Why? Our flight to Toronto was at 6:30am. Yikes.

Feeling Like Death

It was a shame we had to leave the party because at around midnight we began making friends. Dancing was great and so was the vibe. But we had to stick to a strict 2am departure from the nightclub to make our flight. Obviously, we were NOT going to have any delays on the day we’d actually want one to happen.

We left at 2am, went back to our hotel to shower and get ready and then took a Lyft over to LaGuardia airport. Just to compare, on the Friday the drive from LaGuardia was 45 minutes + while the one at 3am on a Monday morning to LaGuardia took under 20 minutes. Crazy.

Once we arrived at the airport we went through the regular screening process and got some food in our system. As you can tell by the featured image/cover for this blog post – that is how I felt at THAT moment in the airport. We went from napping to clubbing to the airport. It wasn’t that we were hungover, we were STILL DRUNK. I did learn that you’re not supposed to tell the flight attendants that though. She said they can’t let drunk people on airplanes, so just stick to ‘hungover’.

I sat in LaGuardia with sunglasses on because everything was too bright for me. THAT is how bad the situation was with my body at the time. Pathetic.

Laguardia
Mmm…. Nutella at airport.

The flight ended up leaving on time and I managed to be in my bed in Toronto by about 9am. At least that all worked out because I spent my entire Monday sleeping off the pain from the weekend.

I hope this post doesn’t lead you to think I’m a raging alcoholic. I mean I enjoy drinking and don’t do it too often, but when I do, it’s party time!

And boyyyy did we party. This was by far the best weekend I’ve ever had in New York and it was my fifth time going. We enjoyed it so much that we spent time discussing when we would come back and do it all over again.

New York was awesome, moral of the story is that when you drink your body will hate you. The end.

Croatia Recap: Dimensions Fest and Beautiful Scenery

I spent a lot of time traipsing through Croatia in August.

My grandmother and uncle live there, some of my fondest childhood memories are there and – beaches, duh. Can’t ignore the incredible variety of beaches in Croatia. The beginning of my Croatia odyssey was in the south, and you can read all about that experience in: three days in Dubrovnik.

But this post is about the rest of Croatia, the part that doesn’t have thousands of tourists being annoying and squished. This post is about the amazing experiences in Pula, Opatija and Crikvenica.

Opatija

This was the place I spent the least amount of time in, but, I really hope to come back one day. My mother insisted that I had to experience this small city for myself and I’m truly grateful I did. It’s gorgeous!

Palm trees, beaches and old buildings. It looks very posh and I was happy it wasn’t super busy towards the end of August. I loved the few hours I got to wander around Opatija. Make sure to hit the beach and eat some delicious ice cream.

Pula

I had been to Pula before, most recently in 2015 while traveling with my two best friends through Europe. My grandmother lives in this city, so that was always my reason to visit it.

On this occasion, yes, my grandmother was there but I had another reason to visit. This was my chance to finally attend Dimensions Festival! Imagine attending a concert in a 2,000 year old Roman Coliseum? Exactly. It’s unimaginable. I was lucky to have chosen 2019 as the year to attend because it would be the last time held in Pula. For 2020 it looks like they’re moving the three-day festival over to Tisno, Croatia. No more big concert in the Coliseum.

I did not attend the full three days of the festival and instead chose to just go to the opening concert. Can’t say I knew any of the performers or much of their music, but Anderson Paak sure kicked ass up there. Incredible performance and an incredible atmosphere inside such an old structure.

Pula is FULL of old structures. The Coliseum is obviously the most popular one, but if you take a walk around the center of the city you see many remnants of the Roman Empire.

Crikvenica

This is my absolute favourite city in Croatia from when I was younger and after this trip – it stays at the top of the list. I love Crikvenica. It has everything you want in life for a happy existence.

Beaches

Ice Cream

Ice Cream

Some more Ice Cream

Seafood Pizza

Did I mention, Ice Cream?

You get the point. I swear Crikvenica has more places to eat ice cream than it has actual inhabitants. The downtown is bustling with people, events and all kinds of food to eat. The beach stretches super long and for me, it was really close to my uncles place. I could walk six minutes downhill and be on a beautiful beach.

If you have time to make it to Crikvenica, you should go. You won’t regret having an awesome time in this city.

I also wanted to make sure to give a special shout out to the Limski Kanal area, in Croatia. If you want to take a quick detour from Pula to go eat some of the best mussels ever, go over to that little area. If I may give some sound advice, PLEASE DO NOT TYPE ‘Limski Kanal’ INTO YOUR GPS. I made this mistake and we ended up driving through a bush that lead to more bush and we had to escape it super awkwardly. Instead, type in ‘Restaurant Fjord‘ which will take you to an amazing restaurant where you can eat mussels BY THE KILO!

Limski Kanal

Visit Croatia outside of Dubrovnik. It has a lot to offer and some really kind locals as well. Make sure you have their currency on hand as all of the places we went to eat did NOT take Euros (yet).

Sretno 🙂

Nine Days in Antalya: Dental Work and Eating Everything

I wasn’t planning on going to Turkey during this trip, I really wasn’t. My initial plan was to do my dental work in Bosnia. I e-mailed a bunch of dental places, got quotes, times etc. Eventually I decided to contact a dental place I had seen on Instagram and YouTube – Dental Centre Turkey.

Their pricing and timing made the most sense to me and I had never been to Turkey before! Country #41? Hell yea.

Now, if you’d like to read about the whole dental work process, you can click here. There’s really no need to talk about that in this post, I explain it at length in the other one. I did need to mention WHY and HOW I ended up in Antalya, so there’s that explanation. Teeth.

Around my dental appointments I wanted to share what other shenanigans I got into. I did take a day trip to Pamukkale and that was an unforgettable experience that you can also read about here.

But, let’s discuss being in Antalya.

Arriving in Antalya/My Hotel

Naturally, I have to talk about getting to Antalya first. I took a flight from Sarajevo to Istanbul to Antalya. To go to Turkey, you do need a VISA that you can purchase online I think three months before you fly. (Canadian citizens.) It came to about $60.00 USD. Also, you must take advantage of the restaurants in Ataturk airport!! I had the best dessert ever in the domestic departures area.

When I arrived in Antalya, the hotel I was staying in had arranged a private driver to come scoop me and take me to it. The place was called Lets Stay Boutique Hotel Antalya. The location was perfect for accessing all of Antalya because it was kind of in the ‘middle’ I would say. A 20-minute cab ride one way and I was in old town and a 20-minute cab ride the other way and I was on a beach. Furthermore, it was only about a 7-minute drive from my dental clinic. Very accessible place.

They had breakfast included every morning, the staff were great, the room was perfect for me and there was also a pool. If you want something quaint and simple (but also clean) I would suggest choosing this hotel when in Antalya.

Another awesome thing about the location of my hotel was that it felt like there was zero tourists near me. All I heard during my time in the hotel and in the restaurants surrounding it was Turkish. I love that! From discussing with others who have visited Antalya apparently the majority of the tourists stay in the beach resorts or all-inclusives. There was truly no point in me being in an all-inclusive while getting my teeth done because I wasn’t sure how much eating I’d actually be able to do.

The first night I arrived in Antalya I ended up at a random sports bar watching two Turkish teams play soccer. None of the servers spoke English and none of the menus were in English either, the kind of experience I live for. Just point at pictures, easy way to order delicious food. Also, after eating in this restaurant I was able to explore some more near the hotel. Found not only one, but TWO whole waterfalls in the area. Further reaffirming I made the right decision for my accommodations.

Beach Life

I heard Antalya had some nice beach options so I had to make a decision. Do I go to Lara or do I go to Konyaalti? Being that I was unsure how my pain threshold would proceed throughout my days, I chose the closer beach. I went to Lara.

The cab ride from my hotel was only about 15-20 minutes and there was EASILY 9-10 options once you got there on where to plop down. I chose L’Arena Beach. I believe I got to the beach around 10am and didn’t go home until just after 8pm. Spent the whole day lounging alone and taking in some sunshine. If you are pale like I am, don’t worry, there are also plenty of umbrellas to protect you from the sun.

Overall the beach wasn’t particularly busy and I felt comfortable leaving my things on my beach bed. The staff was very attentive and invested in you NOT having your things stolen. Safe space.

Also, big fan of there being a menu on the table in front of the beach bed. All I had to do was call a server over and I’d have pizza, fries, drinks etc. brought right over to me. There is also a HUGE portable charger you can pay to rent for 30 minutes to charge up whatever phone you have. I thought it was kind of neat and since my portable charger managed to die, theirs definitely came in handy.

Fun tip as well – bring your damn water shoes. You’re welcome.

Kaleici – Old Town

When you check TripAdvisor and any other Google Search about what you must see/do in Antalya – I bet Kaleici will come up over and over again.

You must visit the old town part of Antalya. There are soooo many stalls and shops to peruse. The salespeople are warm and friendly, the prices are great and …. food. There is a lot of food. Even though I had my temporary teeth in when I visited the area, I still ate a lot.

The way I structured my walking path was beginning up at Hadrian’s Gate and walking downwards to the marina. If I may recommend that you wear shoes with a lot of grip for this walk as the stones get a little bit slippery and you’re walking downwards. I almost fell many times and I wish to spare you of this embarrassment as well.

When you get down to the marina area, you will also see this little swimming area on the opposite side of it. This place is called Mermeli Beach. I don’t know if I would necessarily call it a beach, but yes, you can lay on a beach chair and enter water in that vicinity.

At the top of the beach there is an amazing restaurant you should check out. I decided to have lunch there and it was awesome! The name of it is Mermeli Restaurant and yes, it is directly connected to the beach below. In fact, to enter the beach you have to enter through the restaurant and take stairs down.

The waiters were lovely, I was given the best seat in the house with the best view. The food was good, but most importantly, the dessert menu? Listen. This dessert menu was so damn good I returned four days later just to pick another item from it. Yes, that good.

Aktur Park

This wasn’t really a part of my initial activity plans when I was looking at Antalya. I’m not a big theme park person in general, but something had opened up that got my attention. I had randomly seen an article on my Google Page that said a new Ferris wheel had been installed at Aktur Park.

This Ferris wheel was going to be named ‘Heart of Antalya’ and would be the 2nd largest Ferris wheel in Europe, after the London Eye. If I have it correctly, it literally opened a couple of days before my arrival in Antalya. I had to go on it. I love views and knowing it was tall enough to be the 2nd largest in Europe, I had to see it myself.

Nice view. No lineup. Had the whole pod-thing to myself.

I’m sure there’s plenty more to do in Antalya than I even got to. You have to understand I work a lot when home in Toronto and these nine days were my first opportunity in a LONG time to do nothing. Some days I just laid in my room watching Netflix. Also, taking into consideration some of these days I was in a lot of pain and on painkillers so going outside wasn’t really an option either.

Hope this gets some of you to want to visit Antalya. Even if it isn’t for dental work, I’d really like to go back. I found the hospitality of the locals to be beyond anything I expected. The city itself has so many awesome things to see and do. Obviously, the food was kick ass. Finally, as a single woman I felt safe and comfortable at all times. I know that sometimes those thoughts deter people from traveling to certain places, but I found everyone (even the men) to be very respectful and kind.

Go visit Antalya for fun or for teeth! Heck, even for hair plugs and nose jobs as per some of the people I saw in the airports in and out of there.
