Day Trip from Naples to the Amalfi Coast

This is one of those places you dream about visiting one day. It is something like my trip to St. Moritz was, a bucket list place you never though YOU would actually make it to. But there I was on my second day of this vacation, heading from Naples to the Amalfi Coast for a day trip.

I booked the trip though TripAdvisor and it is called ‘Sorrento and Amalfi Coast Independent Day Trip from Naples‘ – the cost was $132.58 CAD.

The pick up was a four minute walk from my hotel for the trip and we were off at 9am to go touring the Amalfi Coast. I was a little worried since it was a Sunday that it would be very busy traffic to get to our destinations, but I found the ride to be really pleasant. We had a 10-seater minibus (that had exceptional air conditioning) and it was myself, the driver, a couple from Argentina and another couple from Cyprus. There was lots of space, I was kept chilled and the driver was the right amount of crazy and cautious for me.

The order of the day trip went: Sorrento, Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. There was also a stop for food where we could all have lunch along the way.

I really enjoyed that to begin the trip the driver took us through little cities to get to Sorrento instead of the highway because seeing the smaller/quaint areas was great. Each city we stopped in we had an hour to spend and do whatever we want. This was enough time for me because I researched prior to going on the tour what I’d like to see and would aim to go see that. However, I assume a lot of you came here for pictures so that’s what I’m going to give you.

Sorrento

Positano

Amalfi

Ravello

My favourite out of the four was definitely Sorrento. Although Positano was nice because of the gorgeous views of those houses/shops stacked on an incline – it was WAAAY too busy for me. Amalfi was nice in its own way and Ravello being 400m above sea level provided insane views. BUT, Sorrento is where it is at for me. I couldn’t take all the stairs to the water there like I did in Positano (my legs are sick of stairs on this damn trip) and it was still super nice there.

I hope to one day come back and just spend 4-5 days in Sorrento doing nothing except chilling on the beach. Oh, and not during the height of the tourist season in Europe. Yes, very important.

If you are short on time you should most definitely do this day trip from Naples to the Amalfi Coast. The area isn’t exactly close and it can get costly so if you can still get to see all this beauty for about $130, why not?

Review of Monteverdi VIP Lounge: Malpensa Airport

Let me begin with – this is the first time I have ever used a lounge at an airport. Yes, I am a broke bitch. *shrugs*

I just never saw a need to use them and rarely are any of my layovers over two hours so it seemed like an unnecessary expense for someone who tries to keep everything as cheap as possible.

On Saturday my layover at Milan’s Malpensa airport was a grueling 6.5 hours. That number to me is the worst because it isn’t enough time for me to go venture outside but it’s super long to be sitting in an airport.

Prior on leaving for this trip I had done my research on things to do in Milan’s airport and the Sala Monteverdi / Monteverdi VIP Lounge kept coming up. I said OK, if I’m going to stay in the airport for a long ass time I may need to finally go to a lounge like the fancy pants people.

Sala Monteverdi Milan Receipt

The location of the lounge was over by the A01 gate in Terminal 1. It took me a while to find it because I believe my flight from Toronto had landed somewhere over by B50. My 7.5 hour flight felt really long and I am unable to sleep on long flights, this lounge was needed because Milan’s airport is really busy and being near people while tired rarely works out for me.

Upon entering you go over to the counter and pay the $56.00 CAD fee (36 Euros) with your credit card to use the lounge. They do not accept debit or cash as a form of payment. Then you just go pick your seat and have a super relaxing time.

I liked that there was only about 30 people or so in the whole lounge the entire time I was there, 11:30am to 5:00pm. With the fee you pay you get (very fast) wi-fi, unlimited finger sandwiches, pastries, fruits, yogurts, water, cheese, beer and wine. This was most definitely one of the moments in my life I really wished I enjoyed beer and wine, I feel like intoxication would have made the long layover more enjoyable this way. The pastries and the cheese were incredible. I think I easily ate $56.00 worth of those two categories alone and I REGRET NOTHING.

There are private bathrooms in the lounge as well and I learned that there is also a private shower that is available for use and they would give you the toiletries for it. Fancy.

If you do ever end up at Malpensa airport and have a lot of time to kill, I say splurge and go enjoy this lounge. You probably would have spent way more on some hamburgers and waters while waiting with the masses for over 6 hours anyways. Comfort? Unlimited food? Liquor? Quiet? Unbeatable.

Packing for 23-Days in Europe

I have to admit, I’m in a different situation that I am just not accustomed to with this upcoming trip.

Today I embark on an adventure that won’t end until Labour Day and I feel less prepared than usual. You want me to pack just a carry-on for Carnival? Sure. You want me to pack just a carry-on for 12-days during winter in Europe? No problem.

So now, you want me to pack checked-in luggage to go through Italy, Bosnia, Croatia and Turkey? Shit. I’m not sure what I’m doing here.

I rarely travel with checked-in luggage, in fact, I fucking hate traveling with it. Why? The airlines can (and have) lose luggage, I have to wait in ticketing lines to drop the bag like the other peasants, I have to wait to pick up the bag after I land etc. It really is a nuisance traveling with a large bag, ESPECIALLY if you’re going to multiple places like I am. It’s totally fine when you’re going to lay your ass on a beach for a week in an all-inclusive, but anything else totally sucks.

For every trip I bring my travel must-haves, so that is pretty straightforward. Now I also have a tripod and a laptop to add in the mix because I intend on posting to the blog in between gorging on food and swimming. I wanted to do this trip with just a carry on, I really did. But my mom kind of hit me with the ‘you can’t look like a bum coming home‘ so I knew I had to prepare actual outfits for this journey. When I pack just a carry on it’s so simple to me because I don’t have much space so okay a one-two shorts, four tops, two sandals, two bathing suits, some toiletries and a Dr. Bronner’s so I can bathe my skin and also wash my socks in a sink with it.

Now you want me to choose things for a WHOLE ASS BAG? 23 Kilograms? FML.

The way I mapped things out in my head was like this:

  • I need to be comfy for Naples and Dubrovnik because I am doing day trips, so jean shorts and comfy tops I can sweat in.
  • I have to (HAVE TO) look like a baddie walking through Baščaršija in Sarajevo because the women there are always done up, so okay a nice dress and, sigh, I guess I’m bringing makeup on this trip.
  • The 9-days in Turkey I will spend time being in pain from dental work so I need comfy clothes and bathing suits, bet.
  • The trekking through northern Croatia requires little clothing so bathing suits and tiny shorts will do, fantastic.

During this packing I also realized I own a million more bottoms than I do tops, so if you see me repeating outfits while abroad – mind your business. One of the first posts I wrote for this blog was about why people are terrible at packing, well, at least why I think they are. Vanity. That shit will have you messed up because you’re worried about your things to post instead of what is happening in front of you. The only time I need to worry about looking decent is really for Sarajevo, so I think I will be fine for any vain thinking.

As it looks right now, my list is something like:

  • 8 shorts of different lengths
  • one pair of long, thin pants
  • 10 tops
  • 5 bathing suits
  • two maxi dresses
  • two rompers
  • three sandals
  • water shoes (DAMN YOU PEBBLED BEACHES)
  • makeup
  • toiletry stuff
    • this also includes sunscreen, insect repellent, after-bite
  • Sudafed and EarPlanes so I don’t risk my hearing (if you, like me, have serious sinus issues or get sick easily while traveling – I really recommend buying these to help alleviate the pressure and damn near deafness after you land. I used the EarPlanes during my December trip through about nine flights and I didn’t experience that typical descent pain at all)
  • undergarments
  • bag for dirty clothes
  • a rain poncho
  • 2 stud earrings / 2 big ass hoop earrings
  • shitload of electronics for charging, voltage converting etc. (this will likely be in my carry-on though)

+ my ‘travel outfit‘ which is usually leggings, t-shirt, running shoes

The goal is that even though the limit is 50lbs, I want to keep it to under 30lbs so I can buy things when I am abroad to bring home and still remain under. I managed to keep it under that weight, a whole 23lbs lighter (10.6kg)!!! The bag does look super duper full, but that is because everything I packed is very light and my arms got tired rolling. I’ll probably be able to repack it again and not make it look so stuffy.

For the first time ever I am also traveling with one of those big camping-looking-bags. You know the ones that identify you as a teenager backpacking through Europe during your gap-year? That. It is both top and bottom loading so I think I’ll have an easier time accessing my clothing, it’s just very different to me. Previously when I did take checked-in luggage with me, it was the typical rolling bag that you just lay flat and pack whatever into.

So there you have it, my packing list for being away in Europe for over three weeks during summer and trying to not embarrass my family for looking a mess.

Wish me luck…..

My Five Favourite Hotels

As someone who tries to save money where I can, usually I end up in an AirBnB. Hotels tend to be more expensive and sometimes I really like engaging with whoever the local person that rents out the AirBnB is. This is just a different experience than that of the impersonal experience we get from hotel stays.

However, when I do save money on a flight I take the opportunity to also splurge on a hotel. It has happened a couple of times and I don’t regret shit! If I can get a cheap deal on a flight, I’ll up the budget for a place to stay and that has sometimes lead me to some incredible hotel stays.

Here are my five favourite hotels I have stayed in so far:

#5) Steel House – Copenhagen, Denmark

I don’t do hostels. That’s not my thing at all. I try to save money, but I refuse to wake up with some stranger hovering over me and now I have to fight. HELL NO.

When I was traveling to Copenhagen this past winter, I stumbled upon this ‘luxury hostel’ as they call themselves on their website, and I was immediately hooked. They had a private room option though, don’t want you to think I suddenly changed my opinion on communal bunk bed living. No.

This place was one of the coolest places I have stayed in during my travels. The location was superb and their amenities were kick ass. The room was very cozy, there was an indoor pool, a gym, a communal kitchen and even a musical space where you could play your instruments.

The best part though? The no-need-to-talk-to-anyone-at-front-desk-check-in. Prior to arriving at the hostel you are sent an e-mail letting you download their app. On this app will be your key! This key lets you go into the elevator to your floor and lets you enter your room. You just would open the app, go to your key and then swipe your phone on the key reader and enter. I loved this option. It let’s you bypass the long lines at check-in counters and also anything extra during check-out. You don’t have to worry about going out and losing your room keys because you hold on to your phone for dear life anyways.

If you are ever looking for a cheap place to stay in Copenhagen that gives you a very cozy private room and cool amenities, I really suggest Steel House.

#4) Hyatt Regency – Cartagena, Colombia

This was a prime example of ‘got my flight for cheap, so let’s splurge a little‘ – and it wasn’t even expensive.

When my friend Lorren and I traveled to Cartagena back in October, we had researched places to stay and once the view from this pool came up….. I mean, LOOK AT IT!

The flight to Cartagena was only $300ish roundtrip so it only made sense to get somewhere to fancy pants to stay for our trip. I won’t write about this hotel at length because I already had posted a Review of The Hyatt Regency, Cartagena article on the blog. But this hotel had to be included in my top five because between the beautiful views, pools, bathroom, location and amazing spa? I high recommend this place if you ever visit.

#3) Azulik – Tulum, Mexico

If you have Instagram, you have likely seen pictures of this place.

My boyfriend and I found out about Azulik the same damn way, and that is what lead us to booking there during our Cancun trip last September. It looks like everything you had seen on Instagram. Although this place is pretty damn pricey per night, for one night or two it was soooooooooo worth the splurge.

This is another hotel I had written a whole post about so I also don’t need to necessarily go into a deep dive of how awesome it was.

Check the ‘How to get from Cancun to Tulum‘ post, if you want to know how to get there from Cancun.

Check the ‘Review of Azulik, Jungle Villa‘ post to read about the whole experience of staying at Azulik for the night.

I would say this is a really great hotel to go to alone or with a bae. With the whole open-bath concept, you’d have to be VERY comfortable traveling with a friend or family member you know? Very romantic spot. Make sure if you go to also head over to Kin Toh for some drinks, but not for dinner. You can read about WHY I say that, here.

#2) Rostrevor – St. Lawrence Gap, Barbados

I loved this hotel. So much.

This place isn’t as fancy as #3 and #4 are but it doesn’t matter, this place was incredible. You literally could not pick a better location for when you attend Cropover in Barbados.

In 2017 my friend Jummy and I went to Barbados for Cropover and we had chosen Rostrevor for our accommodation. Picture this – you have a private beach in the back and nightclubs in the front. OKAY. OKAY?

There is literally no way a place could be situated anymore perfectly than this hotel was. We had the ground floor suite so we could walk out, hit the pool or the beach in under 100 feet. It was clean, quiet and the beach was absolutely perfect. The second you would come back from Foreday morning festivities, you could run right into that water and clean off. Furthermore, you exit out the front and have access to all the mac pie, pigtail and Gap Burger you want. (If you have not had these things, GO HAVE THEM)

The other thing I really liked about this hotel was that they hold your keys at the front desk when you go out. If you have attended any all-inclusive fetes in Barbados for Cropover, you can understand why maybe leaving your keys at home is a good option. Drunken stupors and all.

If you go at any time that is or is not Cropover, still, I really recommend this hotel because for accessibility it’s superb.

#1) Five Palm Jumeirah – Dubai, UAE

Should have expected that the most fancy pants hotel I’d ever stay in would end up being in the Emirates.

In December of 2017 my friend Sherry and I did a trip through Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the Maldives for Christmas/NYE. During the time in Dubai, we chose to splurge a little and stay at the Five Palm Jumeirah. Back then I really should have done a whole review of this hotel on its own, but it takes time to learn this SEO stuff you know?

This place was first class all the way. From the courteous and professional treatment you get upon entering the hotel, the Salvatore Ferragamo toiletries, the gorgeous bathroom in your room, the INSANE buffet breakfast (still addicted to scrambled eggs with creme fraiche), the lounge on a high floor and of course – the pool area. I literally have zero complaints about this hotel.

Everything we paid for was well worth it and if I ever return to Dubai I hope I can stay here again. Make sure you get to the pool nice and early to secure a good spot for the sunshine, otherwise just sit back and press the button at your lounger and the staff will bring you drinks and food.

Ah, the luxury life that I always deserved.

I would like to also give a special shout out to the Penthouse suite at the Bellagio, one for the random hotel we found in Santorini for 40 Euros for three nights and also Simpson Bay resort in St. Maarten. Those three deserve special mentions for sure.

What are some of your favourite hotels you have stayed at during your travels?

Dental Tourism Turkey: Before I Go

Yesterday was officially one month until I leave for my Euro Trip 2019.

August 9th I will take off and be visiting:

  • Naples, Italy
  • Dubrovnik, Croatia
  • Kotor, Montenegro
  • Mostar, Bosnia
  • Sarajevo, Bosnia
  • Antalya, Turkey
  • Banja Luka, Bosnia
  • Crikvenica, Croatia
  • Pula, Croatia

I have been planning and saving for this trip since last year. Going away for 23 days is already pretty costly with paying for all the transportation, accommodations and the food I will no doubt be consuming 24/7 in Europe. HOWEVER, to add to all that, I also intend on getting my teeth done in Turkey. I will become a dental tourist! You would have thought I’d get a BBL before I’d get my teeth done, but here we are.

Why?

Well, my family has been going to Bosnia for sometime to get their dental work done because Canada and the United States charge an arm and a leg for it. Initially I also thought I would go home to get my teeth done, but after doing a lot of research the time frames given didn’t work for me. I am gone for 23 days, and quite frankly, there is no need to be in Bosnia for 14 days of those 23. I love my home, but aside from Neum, WHERE THE BEACHES AT? I love beaches and if I’m going to be somewhere warm in the middle of summer, I want to occupy myself with the beach.

There was a lovely young lady named Brooke who had posted her trip to Turkey to get her teeth done on a YouTube channel. After seeing her post, I decided maybe Turkey was a good idea. Flying from Bosnia to Turkey is cheap and throughout all the posts I was seeing on YouTube and Instagram, it looks like they do some fine dental work there.

The Planning

First I made contact with Dental Center Turkey. I had seen many MANY posts about them on Instagram and all I ever heard was awesome reviews about the work they do.

I contacted them via e-mail and then WhatsApp back in January of this year. By the beginning of February I had already sent them pictures of the current state of my teeth, told them I wanted a smile makeover and asked what they thought.

The e-mail I got back from them VERY CLEARLY stated all my options with a price breakdown. When I tell you the e-mail was like 3-4 pages, I am not kidding. They put everything out in so much detail, it was amazing.

From the choices they gave me, I (believe, because who knows what I’ll want when I get there) I will be doing 16 porcelain veneers, gum contouring, I need a crown and I will also need a gum shield for my new teeth.

Dental Center Turkey Recommendation

British Pounds will be the death of me. But this was the cost breakdown I was given for the work they think I will be needing. This may seem like a lot, but please now watch this:

About $5400.00 to get all that work done. Which, just to give you an example, a SINGLE porcelain veneer in Canada is about $1,200 per tooth.

16 x $1,200.00 = $19,200

ALMOST TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS just for the veneers if I wanted to get them here at home. Not to mention that I still need the crown, the gum shield and the gum contouring. So let’s just say, the cost of all this work would have been about 4x the amount here in Canada vs in Turkey.

I made sure to book my hotel in a good location in Antalya, even though the dental center offers transport to and from every appointment in the price. (awesome!) I’ll probably be inside upset that my face is huge from all the injections, so I need a good hotel to hide out in with a pool.

Oh no, THE FOREIGNERS!

I really wish people would stop asking me if I’m scared about ‘third world doctors‘. You have to wonder if folks think the only doctors that exist in this world are in Canada, America and the UK. I promise you, people in the other 193 countries also need dental work done and have dental schools. It becomes insulting because I happened to be born in another country and because it feels like folks think you’re stupid? Which leads me to some of the most annoying things I have had to experience….

The Questions

Oh, did you do your research?‘ – no I am blindly going into this because an IG influencer said so. The fuck do you think? Of course I did.

I don’t think I could do that.‘ – no one asked you/no one is asking you to

What if something goes wrong?‘ – that is MY cross to bare

If you ask me, I think you look fine now‘ – I didn’t fucking ask you, and you are not paying for the procedure nor does your opinion matter about it. I’m not here to please YOU

So I had a friend who had his done in ______ and didn’t like the results‘ – I’ve also heard of airplanes crashing, therefore, I should not ever take an airplane yes?

The veneers don’t last forever!‘ – I’m well aware, neither did your last two marriages

What if you have to go back to Turkey to do more work in 10-15 years?‘ – it is a $100 flight from Sarajevo to Turkey, it’s really not that serious to me

Why didn’t you just get braces/Invisalign/some other dental thing done instead of having to file down your natural teeth?‘ – So like, first, can braces fix your teeth in a week? Ohhhh. Ok. They can’t. The name of my blog is not ‘The Incredibly Patient Tourist’ – you get the point. Secondly, none of these procedures will fix the points I have on my left and right side (K9’s), the chip I have in my front tooth, the two teeth that stick out at the top, the spaces between my bottom teeth, the shading etc. Veneers fix all my smile issues in a short amount of time and that makes me SUPER happy.

Finally…..

I’m very excited to go get my teeth done. That’s really all that matters to me at this point. I’ve worked hard and non-stop to get the money together to pay for the damn teeth, so I will enjoy them. I’ve wanted to change my smile for some time now and I look forward to being able to smile HUGE in pictures with my friends and in selfies because I will finally have nice teeth.

Make sure you stay tuned to my Instagram between August 9th – September 2nd for all the videos and posts in the aforementioned countries. I will definitely be writing a post talking about how the dental work went with before and after pics, etc.

If you want to plan your own flight + stay to Turkey for teeth (or whatever other reason) you can feel free to request an itinerary on my contact page!
